Hope no one gets screwed on this one...

eBay Linky

I brought the mistake to the seller's attention, and got a message that simply said "thank you", but 2.5 hours later the listing still has not been corrected.

Someone could be in for a (relatively) expensive lesson...

    FA != Fine

The NCS slab says fair details, not fine details as is plastered all over the auction. Slight difference...

That slab is not 214 years old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

  • I'm still not convinced that there's a coin in the slab image
  • He added this at the bottom of the listing:

I have made a mistake, the coin should be graded fair and not fine. If you wish to cancel your bid it would not be a problem. Just let me know and I will end the sale. This is still an extremely rare coin

  • If theres a coin then it must be just a slick brown disk. Though it could just be an empty slab he is selling as rare image

Well, at least he amended the listing.

I thought I was bad with pics. With NCS I wonder it you can even read the date with the naked eye? That is IF there is a coin in the slab.

Other than the fact that there is no coin in the holder.

Better pics but it's also a misleading listing:

    another from the same seller

And what a return policy, as long as you never opened the package to see the item: image

    What credible explanation?!? This?!?

I have made a mistake, the coin should be graded fair and not fine.

Or is it the implicit explanation that there never was a coin pictured in the first place?

This person is giving me ideas for chapter 4 of my eBay photography essentials. Provide two shots of the front of your slab. One further away than the other, but both so dark you cannot see the coin. Oh yeah, permanent marker directly on the slab is a nice touch. Who needs labels?

Looks to me like an honest mistake and of course the people here are going nuts screaming foul. You guys need to relax. I don't understand the arguments that there was no coin pictured? Or there's nothing in the slab? It's pretty clear there's a coin in there. It's FR-02 details, what are you expecting?

I'll spell it out. The auction is for a coin. I see no coin. This slab mentions an issue, corrosion. Now, corrosion can be a small blob near the rim that you cannot see. Or corrosion can be a covering of green Andromeda Strain. I've purchased 'details' coins where the specific details do, in fact, matter.

It's also allegedly a cent from 1794, so it seems like this is important stuff. Even a beaten up worn one could be 'nice' or 'hellishly ugly'. My guess is on the latter. It may be so hideous that we all collectively cannot actually see it.

I expect to see the coin. Otherwise this is a bad situation and simply screams "Item Significantly Not As Described".

Same with the other item. It's a 'details-scratched' coin. If the picture is so poor that there is no remote possibility to see even the largest scratch, then yep, I see a problem. The reverse of this coin is not visible.

I don't think it is my expectations that are a problem.

As I said, the fact that there are bidders reassures me that there are still terminal optimists in this world.

Saying that you are pretty sure that there is a coin in there?!? What image are you looking at? This is what I see. A slab, no coin.

I wrote the guy and told him I could not see a coin and asked for a better pic. He replied that he had a crappy camera and could not do any better.

If that was a mistake, what about the other cent?

It says: Grade: AU 50 (in the listing)

But the blurry pic of slab says AU50 DETAILS SCRATCHED.
The default pic is too blurry to read but you can read it in the other pic.

    Then he says:

"THE ONLY REASON IT DOES NOT GRADE MINT STATE IS BECAUSE IT HAS A COUPLE SMALL SCRATCHES ON THE CHEEK."

A grade of AU 50 DETAILS doesn't mean that it was mint state, it means if you ignored the scratch the coin has details of an AU 50.
If it said NET AU 50 that means the coin would be higher without the damage.
